HOW TO… MAKE A DIY CUSHION COVER.

As we head into the children’s summer holidays, it’s a great time to start planning ideas for activities to keep the youngsters occupied. If you’re spending time off with them during the break too, more adult AND child friendly projects are required so everyone is focused & nobody gets bored.

Crafting is a fabulous idea for this type of thing. And cushion making in particular is something that is very easy to do, & so rewarding when the finished article is completed! Even though a sewing machine is needed for this task, very basic sewing skills are needed, so even if you’re still a bit of an amateur, don’t be put off!

Here at FIRCROFT TEXTILES we have some gorgeous fabric options on our website, perfect for utilising in a craft project such as this. Here we’ll walk you through a very simple task to create a lovely cushion cover from some of our fabric.

You only need a really basic sewing machine for this type of task, some pins to hold the fabric in place & some dressing scissors to help you cut fabric & thread.

A standard cushion size is around 45cm, so for this type of style you need a piece of fabric that is around 137cm wide (our fabrics are ideal as they come in an average width size of 138cm!) Initially you should cut out three pieces of fabric; one 47cm square and 2 rectangles of 47cm x 31cm for the reverse of the cushion.

Along one long edge of both rectangles, fold down 1cm and then 3cm, and stitch.
Then, with the right sides next to one another, lay the two backs on top of the front, overlapping the backs to fit where required. Pin & stitch all around the cushion, giving yourself an allowance of around 1cm, turn the right side out & press.

This gives you a simple design with overlapped edges to the reverse of the cushion. This method is really easy to adapt to a large creation dependent on the size of the fabric you have and the cushion you wish to create. The larger the better for cushions for your pets, or smaller for child friendly cushions.

There is ample space & freedom on the final design to add embellishments to really make the style your own. Buttons, ribbons, bows, & sequins are all popular additions ESPECIALLY when kids get involved with craft projects; so have fun & more importantly, don’t forget to share pictures of your craft creations once completed! Use the hashtag #CraftingWithFircroft on Instagram or Twitter & we’ll RT your finished articles!

 Good luck & have fun!

Great price. A problem with the website when reported was sorted quickly, Cheryl was extremely helpful. Very speedy service and was delivered three days after ordering. I would definitely use the company again if I needed another item.

Cheryl at Fircroft is amazing, she's so helpful & really goes that extra mile to help. She provided delivery dates & times & was more than happy to exchange the rugs for different colours. I would, without hesitation, purchase from Fircroft again. Massive thank you!
